The MRP: Breaking Barriers and Redefining Identity

Discover the fascinating story of the MRP, also known as "Mariposario" (Butterfly Garden), a group of transgender women from Medellín, Colombia, who are revolutionizing social media and challenging gender stereotypes.

The MRP or "Mariposario" is a group of transsexual women from the city of Medellín, Colombia, that has gained notable popularity on social media. From an early age, some of these transsexual women, even as young as 14, have undertaken a process of transformation from their masculine identity to a feminine one through surgeries and hormonal treatments.

One of the founding and most well-known members of the group is Kim Zuluaga. Kim is remembered for her activism when, in 2014, the Constitutional Court of Colombia ruled in favor of her petition to allow her to attend school wearing a female uniform.

For Kim Zuluaga, androgynous identity constitutes an essential part of her being, as she states: "We have the essence of both woman and man, but in a single body."

In 2015, the program Primer Impacto did a report on Kim Zuluaga and the MRP, when they were still teenagers but had already advanced four years in their process of transformation towards the female gender.

The transsexual women of MRP show us the complexity of identity and gender experience, as well as the diversity of paths that people can take in their search for authenticity and personal fulfillment.

The transformation narrative of the MRP offers us a valuable perspective on the transgender experience, gender stereotypes rooted in society, and the importance of engaging in a constructive conversation about identity, gender, and acceptance.

What's your take on gender fluidity and being androgynous?
